Summer is almost here! Did you know that summer camps hire nurses? Not only that, but they offer contracts as short as 2 weeks, and as long as the whole summer. Maybe you have a kiddo and want to go with them to camp; maybe you are outdoorsy, and need a break from hospital life; maybe you are super frugal and can make the pay from a summer gig last you all year. If this sounds right up your alley, working as a Camp Nurse at Camp Lohikan in Pennsylvania might be just what you need. Instead of the sterile walls of a hospital, imagine spending your days in the fresh air of the Pocono Mountains, surrounded by campers eager to enjoy their summer adventures.

What Does a Camp Nurse Do?

At Camp Lohikan, nurses play a crucial role in ensuring the health and well-being of campers and staff. The on-site health center is staffed with 5 to 7 nurses, a camp doctor, infirmary assistants, and a health services manager. Your responsibilities would include:

  • Providing first aid and addressing minor health concerns.

  • Administering medication and managing allergies in coordination with the food service team.

  • Assessing when campers or staff should see the camp doctor.

  • Overseeing sanitary conditions throughout the camp.

  • Screening new arrivals for any health concerns.

This isn’t a high-pressure, emergency-focused job—most of the campers are healthy kids who simply need routine care and occasional first aid. It’s a great opportunity for a nurse who enjoys working with children and wants a break from hospital stress.

Perks of the Job

One of the biggest draws of working as a Camp Nurse is the all-inclusive nature of the job. Here’s what you get:

  • Competitive salary – Camp Lohikan claims to offer some of the best pay for camp nurses.

  • Free private accommodations – You won’t be roughing it in a bunk!

  • Room, board, and laundry included – You’ll have virtually no living expenses during your contract.

  • Travel allowance to help cover transportation costs.

  • Free camp tuition for your children or grandchildren if they join you.

  • High-speed internet access to stay connected with family and friends.

In addition, Camp Lohikan’s nurses can choose to work for 2, 4, 6, or 8 weeks, with opportunities available both before and after the main summer season (which runs from June 29 to August 23, 2025). It sounds like you could possibly turn this into a full time gig, if that is what you are looking for.

Is This Job Right for You?

To work as a Camp Nurse, you must be a licensed RN or LPN in Pennsylvania (a temporary license is available if needed). While previous camp experience isn’t required, you should be comfortable working with children and willing to adapt to the fast-paced, ever-changing nature of camp life. This job is perfect for someone who:

  • Loves working with kids in a fun, informal setting.

  • Wants to escape the hospital for the summer.

  • Enjoys the outdoors and being part of an energetic community.

  • Is looking for short-term, flexible employment.

Not Near Pennsylvania? No Problem!

There are plenty of other camps hiring nurses across the country. Here are a few examples:
